Future of Gaming - NPCs are getting alive!

Famous American Painter Georgia O’Keeffe once said, “To create one’s own world takes courage.” Well, for Non-Playing Characters, also called NPCs, I would say, “ to create one's world takes AI !”

First, let me clarify the Non-Playing Characters (NPCs) concept. Many of us have engaged in video games at some point. In these games, you encounter characters you can manipulate – these are the central characters, often called playable characters. However, within a video game, there exists a multitude of characters that contribute to the storyline and narrative. These characters provide significance to the missions undertaken by the central characters. They are known as Non-Playing Characters or NPCs.

At present, we have limited control over the actions and responses of these NPCs since they operate based on preset codes. However, a significant transformation is on the horizon. Instead of being passive components of console/metaverse/RPG games, these AI-driven NPCs can now actively engage with users, adapt to changing circumstances, and even simulate emotional responses. As a result, the players can have an immersive experience that closely mirrors the unpredictability and richness of real-life interactions. Wow, now the games will never look predictable because the NPCs will behave differently every time you play.
