This Week’s Story
Global Production Studios Poised for Significant Cost Savings with Latest Pre-Production Technology Advancements.
Last week, Nikkei Asia covered the news about the Sony Group opening their advanced pre-production Virtual Studio in Palo Alto, California, named TorchLight.
The cost of film production has been soaring in recent years, with studios and creators spending millions of dollars redesigning film sets and reshooting sequences to achieve perfect shots. Effective integration of technology in pre-production can lead to significant cost savings during the production period.
Pre-production is an early stage of any project, including commercials, music videos, short films, and feature films. This crucial step defines how efficient, organised, and ultimately successful the production stage will be.
Through TorchLight, Sony aims to address the 3D previsualization aspect of production. Creators can immediately generate computer graphics of scenery mimicking real-life filming locations with the help of high-precision cameras, sensors, markers, and software at the facility.
Using trial and error, directors and staff can use Torchlight to virtually map out optimal camera angles, lighting, and other details. The data is saved and utilised when it comes time to film the scenes.
Let's take a look at some cutting-edge pre-production technologies in action that will transform the way we shoot and edit video content in the future.
3D Printing
3D printing is being leveraged to push the limits of prop building, costume design, and more in the pre-production process. This tech’s unique strengths enabled artists to design three-dimensional objects with an intense level of detail that would require countless hours of human labour to be replicated by hand. 3D printing allows these objects to be designed on a small scale with relatively little effort.
AI powered Casting
Revolutionary advancements include AI-powered casting platforms that utilise machine learning algorithms to assess actor profiles, past performances, and audience feedback. By aligning actors with roles that suit their abilities and appeal, filmmakers can optimise their cast for maximum potential. This technology shows the potential to unearth hidden talents and unveil new stars.
AI Powered Script Breakdown Automation
This technology is significantly accelerating the pre-production phase. Traditionally, breaking down a script to identify and categorise various elements like scenes, characters, and props was a manual and time-consuming process. Now, AI algorithms can analyse a script in a fraction of the time, accurately identifying and organising these elements, thereby streamlining scheduling and budgeting. Using Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities, these tools can understand and interpret the nuances of language in the script, ensuring that the synopsis captures not just the events but also the tone and subtleties of the story.
Cutting-edge pre-production technologies have the potential to reduce costs and time by up to 20% for a standard $100 million family movie.

Viewpoint
Advanced pre-production technologies hold immense potential, but success in the upcoming production era hinges on their careful application. While these technologies offer cost and time-saving benefits, concerns persist about potential job displacement. The key is to empower individuals across business and creative roles through targeted upskilling in critical areas. Anticipated shifts in job roles due to new tech highlight the need for proactive training. For instance, casting directors can learn to operate AI-based casting tools, and set designers can undergo training to become proficient in 3D printing. This inclusive approach aims for growth and a brighter future for the film and video content industry.
